    1. Stick to the Recommended Length

    Search engines typically display up to 155-160 characters of your meta description. If your meta description goes over this limit, your text will get cut off with an ellipsis (…), potentially losing key information. Aim for concise and write the description within 160 characters limit.

    Here is an example of a compelling and yet concise meta description in respect to a badly conceived meta description.
    Good: Explore 5 easy-to-make pasta recipes perfect for quick dinners. From creamy Alfredo to tangy tomato basil, dinner is sorted! (Compelling and within 160 characters)
    Bad: Here’s a blog on pasta recipes you’ll love. Need dinner ideas? This one has some for you, but keep in mind, there are more out there, too. (beyond the general cut-off of 160 characters and general).

    2. Use Keywords Strategically

    Incorporate your main keyword organically into the description to boost its search engine ranking and grab the attention of users searching for that specific term. Make an effort to incorporate keywords at the first available opportunity. However, use keywords naturally and avoid overusing the keyword, as this can give the impression of being overly promotional. Over-stuffing of the keywords, may also invite Google’s penalty.

    Consider meta description as an advertisement for your page. Use actionable language to intrigue users to click, by highlighting the benefit they’ll gain. Words such as “Discover”, “Unlock”, “Learn”, “Enjoy”, “Explore”,  and “Find out” etc. can create a sense of urgency and interest.

    Good: Unlock the secrets to perfect sourdough bread with our step-by-step guide. Get tips, tricks, and recipes to bake like a pro!
    Bad: This page is about making sourdough bread. Find information, tips, and recipes on how to make it.

    4. Match the Page Content

    A meta description should accurately reflect what’s on your page. Misleading descriptions might earn you a quick click but will lead to high bounce rates and, worse, frustrated users. In turn, it results in lower rankings in how Google works for content relevancy.

    5. Consider User Intent

    Think about what users are searching for and frame your meta description around their needs, but don’t write anything beyond the page content. Are they looking for reviews? Tutorials? Answers to specific questions? Address their intent directly.

    • Don’t be Ignorant on Details: Vague meta descriptions that don’t tell users what to expect, should be avoided. 
    • Duplicating Content: Using the same meta description across multiple pages reduces their effectiveness. Google usually considers them as duplicate meta tags. 
    • Focusing Only on Search Engines: Descriptions are written to influence users’ decision to click on SERP, not algorithms. Hence, Prioritize readability.

    Writing effective meta descriptions is both an art and a science.
